How pricing works

Furniture Removal Priced by Truck Space

Furniture removal is priced by the share of the truck your pieces fill, not by what they weigh or what shape they are in.

The trade calls it "volume pricing". A lone recliner takes a sliver of the truck and costs a sliver of a load, while a sectional, a bedroom set and a dining table take a good deal more. More pieces and bulkier pieces raise the price; a heavy oak dresser and a light one of the same size take the same room.

The quote covers the lifting, the loading, the hauling and the disposal in one figure, and we give you the whole figure before we start.

These are what set the price:

  • The share of the truck your pieces fill
  • How many pieces there are, and how bulky
  • How far we carry them to the truck

These play no part in it:

  • What the pieces weigh
  • What condition they are in

A single piece

Single Couch and Single-Item Pickup Prices

Removing a single couch in Jacksonville can typically run $79 to $195 a job.

$79 to $195

Typical single-couch removal, Jacksonville

A lone couch is usually billed as a single item or as a minimum charge, the smallest load a hauler will take, and some haulers price by the piece while others price by the share of the truck. A smaller furniture job across the city typically runs $59 to $119.

These are typical figures for the area, not our quote. Your price comes from the call.

A bigger job

Truckload Pricing by Load Size

Bigger jobs can be priced in load tiers, a quarter, a half, three quarters or a full truck, and one full truck holds more than six pickup-truck loads.

Here is how the four tiers compare.

Load tierShare of the truckThe kind of job it fits
Quarter loadA quarter of the boxA couch and a chair, or a mattress, box spring and frame
Half loadHalf the boxA living room: a sectional, a recliner and the tables
Three-quarter loadThree quarters of the boxSeveral rooms of furniture going at once
Full loadThe whole box, more than six pickup-truck loadsAn estate cleanout or a whole house

The tier your pieces land in sets the price, and we tell you the whole figure before anything goes on the truck.

Where the pieces sit

Curbside Pickup Versus In-Home Removal

In-home removal costs more than curbside pickup because the crew carries every piece out of the room it sits in, a back bedroom or an upper floor included.

A paid hauler is not the only way to clear a piece from the curb. The city's household bulk collection also takes sofas and chairs at the curb on its own schedule, with rules on size and preparation.

Curbside or garage

You move the pieces out to the curb, the driveway or an open garage before we arrive, and we load from there. Less carrying, so it is the lower price.

You lift nothing

From inside the house

We carry each piece out from wherever it sits, down the stairs and through the door. More labor, so it costs more, and the couch never touches your back.

What moves the number

Other Factors in the Final Price

Stairs, access, the number of pieces and whether any piece can be donated all shift the final price.

Every extra piece takes more room in the truck, and a bulky piece takes more than a slim one, so a "sectional" moves the number more than a single loveseat. A long carry from the back of the house, a tight stairwell, or a "sleeper sofa" with its steel frame inside all add labor. A piece clean enough to donate can take some of the sting out of the rest.

Stairs, Upper Floors and Access

A pickup above the first floor takes more labor than one at ground level, and the price can rise with it.

Across the trade, a carry down the stairs often comes with a damage waiver to sign, because a heavy piece on a staircase puts the walls, the rail and the piece itself at more risk.

How a Donation Receipt Offsets the Cost

A usable piece that goes to donation can earn a "tax-deductible receipt", and that receipt can offset part of what the removal costs.

How the value of donated furniture is set is laid out in the IRS publication Determining the Value of Donated Property.
