Furniture Disposal Options for Jacksonville Households

The city's bulk pickup, a transfer station, a store take-back, donation or a hauler like us: each route asks something different of you. Here is what each one takes, so you can match every piece to the right one.

The routes

Five Ways to Dispose of Old Furniture

Old furniture leaves a home by one of five routes: bulky waste collection, a transfer station, a retailer haul-away, donation pickup or a hauler.

Choosing between them comes down to cost, how much work you take on, and how much of the piece gets a second life.

Here is each route, with what it asks of you.

  • Bulky waste collection The city truck takes furniture you set at the curb on your collection day, within its size rules.
  • Transfer station You load broken or unusable pieces into your own vehicle and drive them to the drop-off.
  • Retailer haul-away Some stores take the old piece for a small fee when they deliver the new one; others do not.
  • Donation pickup A charity collects clean, sound pieces it can pass on and turns away stained, torn or broken ones.
  • That's us
Hauler A crew comes in, carries every piece out from wherever it sits and drives it away. You lift nothing.

City pickup

Bulky Waste Collection

Bulky waste collection is the city service for furniture too big for the trash cart: you set it at the curb, and a separate truck picks it up on a scheduled day, within size limits.

In Jacksonville that is the city's household bulk collection, which takes mattresses, sofas, chairs and other furniture as long as each piece meets its size and preparation rules. The City of Jacksonville Solid Waste household bulk collection page sets those rules out.

The catch is the curb. Every piece has to be out at the road before the truck comes, which means getting a sleeper sofa or a dresser through the door and down the driveway on your own, then living with it on the lawn until collection day.

The drop-off

Transfer Station Drop-Off

A transfer station makes sense for broken or unusable furniture that you can haul there yourself.

Most people call it the dump. It is where a piece too far gone to donate ends up, and broken, ruined or unusable furniture belongs either there or with bulky waste collection, never in the recycling cart.

It works when you have a truck or a trailer, someone to help with the lifting, and pieces nobody can reuse. The whole trip is yours: loading at home, driving across town, unloading at the drop-off lane, and a charge set by what you bring.

Retailer Haul-Away on Delivery

Some furniture retailers will take the old piece away for a small fee when they deliver its replacement, and others send you to a hauler instead.

The take-back rides on the delivery: the old bed leaves on the truck that brought the new one, and the fee goes by its size, not its condition. Other stores offer no removal at all and point you to haulers, furniture banks or resale. If you are not buying new, this route is closed.

Why Furniture Stays Out of Curbside Recycling

Most furniture is kept out of curbside recycling because varnished wood and mixed materials cost more to recycle than they are worth.

That goes for sofas and most other pieces. Metal-framed furniture is the partial exception: taken apart, its frame can go to "scrap metal recycling", the trade's name for selling or dropping off the metal, while the wood and fabric still go in the trash. The U.S. EPA's durable goods data tracks how much furniture ends up in municipal solid waste and how much of it is landfilled.

Selling it yourself

Selling Furniture Online and Its Risks

Selling furniture online can bring strangers into your home and open you up to scams.

A Facebook Marketplace listing means handing out your address, letting buyers in to look the piece over, and counting on them to get it out the door. Some buyers are out to defraud you, and one who wrestles a dresser down your hallway can get hurt or damage the house on the way.

A sale can still be worth the trouble for a valuable piece. For the rest, one of the routes on this page usually costs you less time and less risk.

Choosing a Disposal Route

The piece's condition, its size and how far you can move it decide which route fits.

The table lines each route up against those questions.

Donation for Pieces in Good Condition

Donation fits a clean, sound piece that a program will accept.

Good, usable furniture is the kind that gets donated or resold, while stained, torn or broken pieces are not. Habitat for Humanity's ReStore donation page lists new or gently used furniture among the goods its stores accept.

Hauler Pickup for Heavy Furniture

A hauler fits when the pieces are heavy, upstairs or there are a lot of them, because the crew does all the carrying.

Furniture is bulky, heavy and awkward around corners, down stairs and through doorways, and moving it without help is how people get hurt and walls get gouged. Heavy, upstairs pieces are what we at Duval Junk carry out in Furniture Removal, loading them and sweeping up behind ourselves.
