Furniture donation guide

What Furniture Qualifies for Donation in Jacksonville

Donation programs take furniture that is clean, solid and free of stains, tears, odors and pests. When a piece does not pass, we haul it away instead.

Free, no-obligation estimates. We answer the phone or call back the same working day.

The condition test

Furniture That Qualifies for Donation

Furniture qualifies for donation when it is clean, structurally sound and free of stains, tears, odors and pests.

Donation pickup networks only take gently used pieces they can resell or pass on, and nothing broken. Condition decides where a piece goes: a good, usable sofa or dresser is donated or resold, and a broken, stained or worn-out one goes to the trash or recycling. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore program takes new or gently used furniture, and the First Coast Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes furniture donations around Jacksonville.

Walk around each piece and check it against these points.

  • Clean
  • Structurally sound
  • No stains
  • No tears
  • No odors
  • No pests

Turned away

Pieces Donation Programs Turn Away

Donation programs turn away stained, torn, broken or pest-exposed furniture, and most do not take mattresses or box springs.

Pet hair and heavy wear get a piece refused too. Furniture with bed bugs cannot be donated at all and has to be disposed of.

The items most donation programs refuse are listed below.

  • Stained upholstery
  • Torn fabric
  • Broken frames
  • Bed bugs
  • Mattresses
  • Box springs

Scheduling a donation pickup

How Donation Pickup Works

Most donation pickups ask for photos when you schedule and for the pieces to wait in a garage, driveway or first-floor spot.

A standard charity pickup runs in three steps.

  1. Send photos when you book

The program asks for photos of every piece when you schedule, so anything that will not pass is turned down before the truck comes.

  2. Stage the pieces outside

Set the furniture in the garage, carport or driveway, at the curb, or in a first-floor spot the crew can reach from the door.

  3. The crew loads from there

The pickup crew takes the pieces from where they wait. A standard ReStore or furniture bank crew does not go up or down stairs inside the home.

Stairs are the usual catch. A dresser in an upstairs bedroom has to be down on the ground floor before a charity crew arrives. A junk removal crew does the lifting from anywhere in the home, which is the job to call us for.

The tax receipt

Tax-Deductible Donation Receipts

A furniture donation to a qualified charity is deductible when the piece is in good used condition or better and you itemize it at its fair market value.

The IRS wants donated furniture in good condition, listed item by item and given a fair market value before it counts. The IRS guide to determining the value of donated property explains how that value is set for used household items like a sofa or a dining set.

Donations to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit are tax-deductible, and a charity such as a Habitat ReStore typically issues the "tax-deductible receipt" when the furniture is dropped off. Keep it with your list of what you gave, and let your tax preparer settle the figure.

When the answer is no

When Donation Is Not an Option

Furniture no program accepts still has to go somewhere, and a hauler or a disposal route is where it goes.

Furniture in good condition can be donated. Broken, ruined or worn-out furniture has to go to bulky waste collection or a transfer station, and a sagging sleeper sofa is no easier to get there than it was to get into the house.

That is where we come in. Tell us what got turned down and where it sits, and we will give you a free estimate on the phone and a time that suits you.

Furniture Removal That Sorts Donations First

A hauler can take every piece at once and sort usable furniture to donation before the rest goes to disposal.

A junk removal crew loads the whole lot in one visit and sorts it into reusable pieces for donation and the rest for recycling or licensed disposal, so there is no charity pickup on one day and a dump run on another.

Furniture Removal and Haul-Away

Other Disposal Routes

Bulky waste collection, a transfer station and a retailer haul-away are the other routes for furniture a program refuses.

Broken or ruined pieces belong in a "bulky item pickup" or at the "transfer station", never in the curbside recycling cart. A retailer haul-away usually rides along with the delivery of something new.
